not sure about an extra app but you can make an encrypted disk image within Disk Utility. make a new image and give it 128 or 256-bit encryption.
make sure you dont save you password within your keychain as thats pretty pointless.
you can also make a sparse disk image if you want it to only take up as much space as the files added do.
