You can't Airplay the Netflix video, only the audio. To get it to play on your tv, you need a video out cable and an iPhone 4 or newer device.

You can use the Apple TV to airplay Netflix to your TV. However if you just want to watch Netflix, you could use some other device such as a XBOX 360 or PS3. Or the cheapest way is to buy an iPhone to HDMI or Composite cable and connect that to your tv. The most ideal solution is to use the Apple TV

since apple TV has netflix built in, you wouldn't need to do that, unless it was on your friends apple tv and you didn't want to log in
