So after repairing my drive replacing actually I need to figure out which version of the os WAS installled. Is there a way to tell this from some file ine the systrem folder?

If the system still works, you might be able to boot from it.

When did you last update?

Wow, Finder is on version 10.6.4 in Mac OS X 10.6.3.

can't boot

can't boot the disc, I have redone the install, but my fear (since this wasn't my computer) is that it was maybe already upgraded to 10.5 and not still at 10.4.11, and I'll copy over files from a later OS.

Blue Apple=MacOS Version ≤10.4
Black Apple= Mac OS Version ≥10.5

If you can remember the color of the apple up top 😉

anyway

anyway to check on the DISK only, I cannot boot this machine which wasn't mine.

aha

Aha, If I MOUNT the drive on my MBP, via USB which is how I got the data off it, to put on the new drive, I can just get info and it shows 10.4.11

Sweet!

I know you already got the information you were looking for, but the alternate way of doing this is to look at the file at:

/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

The ProductVersion key of that file is probably what you want.

Code:
defaults read /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion ProductVersion
