How can iOS5 and the next iPhone announcements be separated? That's actually rather easy.

What could the next iPhone have that would affect what features come in iOS5?
  • Better Camera?
  • Support for more carriers?
  • LTE Support?
  • Faster Processor?
  • More RAM?
  • Different physical control layout?
None of these will affect what the new features in iOS5 will be. They may need changes to Apps and pieces of iOS5. But it won't be features of iOS5, they will be phone features.
the only thing that'd come to my mind would be NFC with deep OS integration, but that's as likely as ... uhm ... well ... the 5th gen iPhone being announced at WWDC, really ;)

I can't be the only one that sees that 5 and thinks the 5th model of the iPhone is going to come out? But I know there have been a lack of concrete rumors that we'd expect if a new model was due out very soon.

"Did IQ's just drop sharply while I was gone?..." Ripley, Aliens

The '5' is in reference to the new iOS5. How is this so difficult to understand? Apple used the exact same logo but with a '4' when previewing iOS4

Ok, and speaking of IQ dropping sharply...
2007-iPhone comes with version 1.0
2008-iPhone 3G comes with version 2.0
2009-iPhone 3GS comes with version 3.0
2010-iPhone 4 comes with version 4.0
2011-???

So the 5th iPhone will probably debut at a similar time to iOS 5.0, how difficult is that to understand?

iOS 4 was previewed a few months before the iPhone 4 was announced
iPhoneOS 3 was previewed a few months before the iPhone 3GS was announced

the only thing that changed is the date iOS is getting previewed (moving from march to june)
the release cycle is shifting a few months, big deal... :/

Anything is possible. I am looking forward to the next model, whenever it comes out. Most of the rumors seem to be pointing to a later release.

If the next iPhone gets released in the fall, I think it will make an appearance as..."one more thing!". Here is why I think so.

1. Apple was embarrassed about losing secrecy on the iphone4. Therefore, I think Steve J & company want to show the world they can keep it under wraps by surprising us at the WWDC. If they wait too long, 3rd party suppliers will usurp the surprise.
2. A Fall iPhone release date would give developers 3 months to get their apps in line. The timing just seams to work.
3. Apple has missed the Summer iphone cycle for the first time ever they need to ensure everyone's continued support. If they stay tight lipped, all those 3GS contracts expiring this summer might jump platforms as opposed to getting a year old phone (iphone4). However, if Apple announces a new model coming people would be more inclined to wait.

Of course, we will just have to wait and see. I'm thinking an iPhone will be announced if not actually displayed.

#3 is actually a good point. Although I'm not sure how much Apple cares about it. Phone contracts don't all line up on the release date, although it certainly is something that AT&T would be concerned about (and users who buy on the 1-year launch cycle).

As for #1, suppliers are already usurping the surprise and have been for a couple months now. We just don't have the concrete level of rumors that we had leading up to a launch like we have had in the past. That lack of information to me actually says they either don't have something ready, or it is the 4S.

It wouldn't be unheard of for Apple the pre-announce hardware 3+ months in advance, but I don't see it happening in this case.

Look at historical data. Apple has a tendency to announce several months before release.

One more thing is coming. So what is it gonna be? My money is on the iPhone because of it's normal release cycle followed by the Mac Air.

Apple pre-announced the iPhone once. They pre-announced the iPad (sorta). Since the initial announcements they have usually only pre-announced a month in advance.

OS updates they pre-announce several months in advance for very good reasons (3rd party devs).

I'll say it again. I just can't believe Apple is going to delay the next iPhone until September if it's just a warmed over iPhone 4. If there's nothing in the new iPhone other than a new chip and better camera, what's the holdup? The only possible explanation is they're waiting for iOS5 to become fully baked before they release a phone for it.

Either way, it seems like it's going to be a yawn-fest for hardware this year.

I agree; however, I think Apple wants to have a universal iPhone (CDMA & GSM), so I think there are some issues besides a simple CPU upgrade. With that said, I think a simple spec bump is very plausible since they do this on the Mac side all the time.

If iOS5 is "revolutionary," I think they will want to showcase it with an A5 (or higher) device, i.e., iPad2 & iPhone4S.
