I stay around 30% unless the ambient light is bright. And, while people complain about a yellow tint on their new rMBP screens; I deliberately create such a thing using f.lux.

I'm always at 100% brightness. From my phone to my computer to my tablet. It's not really about whether I can read, it's just feels more natural to me using my devices at 100%. Of course battery life diminishes but that's really not a problem for me.

I am too. I can't stand to look at something at one brightness if I know it can be even brighter. Auto-brightness? No way. I want it all! Now where's the power outlet...

I'm at 2 clicks from the top setting all the time. Nice and bright, that's how I like it :D
Full brightness is too much for me though

I think it depends on the user, i am a full time photographer and i rely on brightness consistency mostly when post processing photographs. When i am mobile, i tend to use my rmbp in about 50% brightness just to check out and sort out images with lightroom. Camera histogram can help out read lighting information, so i do not need to max out the brightness all throughout our on-location shoot, as we know that if we max out the brightness we'll lose a lot of juice with our machine.

I keep my 13" rMBP at between 50% and 65% brightness. It has nothing to do with battery life since I'm plugged in most of the time - any brighter and it just hurts my eyes.

I'm in dark environments most of the time, though. I'm sure I'd crank the brightness if I was in a bright room or out in the sunlight.

Depends on ambient lighting.

I also use f.lux, and when it's late at night I have the screen brightness set one tick above "off" with the colors warmed. Right now I'm 4 down from max. Top brightness hurts my eyes, frankly.

On my 2010, anything above 70% hurts my eyes, unless, there is a lot of ambient lighting.

I'm finding 50% is less stressful on my eyes. I turned it down to see how it would look at 50% just for this post and I kinda like it. :)

Just curious, was trying to figure out expected battery life of my macbook pro, and most people who comment on what they're getting qualify "I use it at 50% brightness, 30% brightness". Really??

When I try anything below 3 clicks from the top I can barely read a word (non-retina 2009 macbook pro)

Do most people use they laptops at such a low brightness?

Do they struggle to see and just do it for battery's sake or is everyone truly comfortable at this level?

(On a side note, completely irrelevant, I see a lot of people during the day at coffee shops etc with unplugged MacBooks running on battery, with their keyboards fully backlit -- which to me is the very definition of insanity.)

that's because the displays are horrible and people don't want to admit it.

If its pitch black I can do it but 99% of the time its unusable...especially with video and pictures since allot of them need a decently lit screen to be viewable....
