A search for .mkeeper and MacKeeper in Finder turned up nothing, though I have a launch agent from zeobit in my LaunchAgents library. When I typed ls -la ~/Library/LaunchAgents into Terminal, I got this:

drwxr-xr-x 6 Peter staff 204 Apr 1 19:20 .
drwx------+ 57 Peter staff 1938 Oct 23 10:49 ..

-rw-r--r--@ 1 Peter staff 491 Apr 1 19:20 com.zeobit.keep.plist

I also tried grep "/Users/$USER/\..*" ~/Library/LaunchAgents/* | grep -v "/Users/$USER/\.Trash" and got this:

Yep, that's MacKeeper. You should delete anything you find with the name "MacKeeper", "zeobit", "MacPaw" or "CleanMyMac". Both MacKeeper by Zeobit and CleanMyMac from MacPaw are completely unnecessary at best, and potentially harmful at worst.

That did the trick. Thanks! .mkeeper is gone now, even after rebooting. At least I don't have FlashBack. :)

Zeobit, a real mac rumor?

Has anyone read this article about MacKeeper?

http://www.cultofmac.com/170522/is-mackeeper-really-a-scam/

I'd like to hear the thoughts, as it directly addresses everyone on this Web site who hates on Mackeeper.

I have blindly followed the people on this site regarding Mackeeper because I'm new to Mac, but after reading the article I'm starting to be swayed to actually purchase Mackeeper.

I'm about to start recording music and editing video heavily on a Mac that was previously my personal computer. I don't want to reformat, I just want to clean it up around my apps and files as much as possible.

So, I'm back looking at Mackeeper and CleanMyMac, both of which are bashed in this thread.

Please read the article at the link and tell me what you think! :)

I've read the article before. I would not recommend either MacKeeper or CleanMyMac, based on the number of complaints that have been posted in this forum and elsewhere. As an example: CleanMyMac cleaned too much. Here's a recent example. While you may not have experienced problems yet, enough people have that it's wise to avoid it, especially since there are free alternatives that have better reputations, such as Onyx.

You don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Most only remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space, with the risk of deleting something important in the process.

These apps will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space. In fact, deleting some caches can hurt performance, rather than help it, since more system resources are used and performance suffers while each cache is being rebuilt.

Many of these tasks should only be done selectively to troubleshoot specific problems, not en masse as routine maintenance.

Mac OS X does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software. Among other things, it has its own maintenance scripts that run silently in the background on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, without user intervention.
