I saw quite a few people with the new mbp showing small imperfections in the outer shell scratches paint chips and the like. I wondered how common the was for new mbps?

I have bought two mbp’s in the past both were perfect out of the box.
This is a small sample obviously but there are people on these forums who have bought many and will give you a better idea. To be honest I would never sweat a barely visible scratch or similar as that will happen in the first few weeks of use anyway.

This has been repeated in the forums many times, that people facing problems with their machines are far more likely to surface their problems here, than those without and just quietly enjoy their new Macs. (Although there seems to be a fair amount of felicitations as well, which is good.)

Apple sells millions of MacBooks every year. If say even 1% of them had these kinds of issues, it would be a MAJOR news story and every media outlet in the world would be all over it.

You are posting this on an enthusiast forum where only the most passionate Mac people post (happy or sad). There are millions (hundreds of millions?) of people who are using their Apple product every day and have never heard of MacRumors.

Any poll you do here is completely unreflective of reality.

Hello tormac,
Thanks for your reply.
I would say you are probably right to an extent.
But if you want to survey people who own macbook pros then, a mac book pro forum where people are discussing their mac book pros would seem like a good place to start.
This is not supposed to be a scientific survey just getting an idea from some people who have a mac book pro.
Cheers!

Oh absolutely. I wasn't trying to be rude, apologies if it came across that way. Polls like this are fun and discussing this is why we're here.

Perfect mbp are pretty rare. I doubt many are checking their mbp with bright flash light. Most will find imperfections then.

The sharpened edge on the keyboard level is very common for chips ;).

Very few people create web pages or posts telling you about how perfect their device is, normally people take to forums or social media to complain, so it appears that is the norm, but in reality issues probably only exist to less than 1% of the population.

I've bought several Apple products, both new and refurbished, from Apple and authorized retailers (like Best Buy), and have not had a cosmetic issue on any of them, if that helps.

I hope I didn't just jinx myself for when I order my 14" MBP...

The big question is: "Did apple change the manufacturer for this mbp 2021?"

I think the employees of the contract manufacturers are very afraid of sanctions. So they put even scratched macbook pros into the packages. Never seen before new laptops with such scratches or chips.

As of right now, my MBA has a little blemish after over a years worth of work. When I got it, it was perfect. Don’t worry, if anything bad happened you can return.

My 14 has a little lid scratch out the factory but honestly I don't care enough to return and replace because I'm gonna be covering the lid with a skin anyway

Out of the 30-ish Macs I owned almost no problems.

One iMac had a dead pixel and a dead hard drive. That was common on all computers and screens in those days. Apple sent someone and hard drive was replaced next day. At that time Apple used to send someone direct to your home for such quick repairs.

One Powerbook had a bad Nvidia chip. This chip affected many Macs and PCs. Apple extended the warranty for everyone for 2 years with free logic board replacement.

That's all. My new Max is faultless.

I've never purchased one that had any imperfections at all. I also just took mine on a long flight and took it around everywhere with me and it still looks like I just took it out of the box.

This is a perfect example of response bias.

Only those people who get a Macbook with an imperfection will speak up and post.

Everyone else who gets a perfect Macbook isn't going to logon and post that they got a perfect, unblemished Macbook.
