I think Apple could easily avoid "Notchgate" by doing the following:

1. When presenting the new MacBooks, talk about the problem of menu commands not available while in full screen mode.
2. Talk about the unused space of the bezel.
3. Present the innovative idea of moving the menu bar up to the bezel, allowing access to the full 10X16 screen

In addition modify the user interface as follows:
1. Force black background of the menu bar.
2. Allow applications to disable the menu bar in full screen mode, but the system will replace it by black bars.
3. The apps will be able to display informative text in such a case, but will not be able to alter the color of the bar.

If Apple would have proceeded in such a way, the "notch" would stop to be a notch as it would have never be visible.

There is no “NotchGate”. There is just a tiny minority of people bitching and bleating about this latest “disaster” because it’s all they’ve got going on in their lives. It is a computer, it is not important in any way shape or form.

There has been far less of a meltdown over this than I was expecting. Being professionally enraged seems to be a vocation for many people these days LOL

Stop with the 'gate' crap already, it's tired and worn out and rarely used correctly. "Gate" appended to a word implies there was a conspiracy and I bet half the people on this forum don't even know the historical significance of it. There is no 'gate'. There's certainly no conspiracy and most people don't give a flying frack about the notch.

Agreed. I thought my use of the double quotes indicates that I completely don't agree with this term (which indeed is wrongly used by others).

I actually don't care much about the "notch". But I don't agree with you about "tiny minority". SO many people are obsessed with this. My post here was meant to indicate that Apple, in my opinion, underestimated the negative reaction to the notch and could easily avoid it.

It's fine as it is.

It's a pointless debate as this is the design language of the MacBook Pro for the foreseeable future. I fully expect it to come to the MacBook Air also at some point although Apple may make it a "Pro exclusive" for a while to distinguish itself from the consumer focussed line.

I agree with the others that the complaints are few compared to the size of the market. Apple will sell millions of these to willing buyers. As for your suggestion, that wouldn't have prevented the complaints about "missing" pixels. You likely would have seen similar complaints about the black menu bar.

-2021 MBP has a useless oversized notch (ie a placeholder)
-2022 MBP has FaceID to fill the notch
-2023 MBP has FaceID hidden under the display (ie no more notch)

Of course it’s a tiny minority. They will sell millions of these things and only a tiny fraction will keep bleating are bitching about it. There is no “gate” and there is no uproar, there is no conspiracy, there is only a tiny percentage of negativity (just to be clear, I am not saying that you believe there is all of that).

And these so-called “so many people“, exactly where are they? Let me guess, technical forums? That means absolutely nothing.

Maybe you are right, but I see these "notch" comments all over, not only in tech forums. One interesting way to get some quantitative figures is to look at Google trends.

Yes but in relation to how many of these things will sell, and not forgetting those people that are bitching about it, many will still buy the new MacBook, the notch won’t put them off, it’s just a drop in the ocean. As I say, too many people need something in their lives to moan about because they’ve got nothing else going on.

The gate term is now pretty uncool apparently. It's rather nonsensical, so it may now be naturally eliminated from the collective vernacular, in a sort of 'natural selection' :D

Notchgate taking off like wildfire. This is very bad for apple. Might be time to sell that stock.

To be fair, the "notch" outrage started based on the sketchy nature of the rumour and the terrible quality picture used to illustrate the issue. Tech places ran with this as the story as it makes for a great clickbait headline right? Apple introduces a notch which will be awful on macOS and take up screen space.

I'll admit, I kind of fell for it. But then people started to actually look in to it and realised that the notch would be part of what was effectively extra screen space on top of the normal 16:10 ratio screen underneath. Which I do think is a very important part of detail missing in the way a lot of places reported the original story.

But by then people had lost their collective **** :)

To be fair, that's just how the Internet works these days.

You are right, and that's why I think Apple made a mistake. Instead of ignoring the issue with the hope that the critique will be minor, they should have control the issue by devoting a couple of minutes to give an explanation in the line of my post above. They could animate how the the menu bar moves up into unused space of the bezel, and make it a feature they are proud of. And the demo should have been with a black menu bar.

All this noise was generated before the event though due to the leaks, so it was all recorded and ready to go.

There is no 'gate' and the notch will not affect sales at all. The notch space will be utilized more in the future (FaceID, sensors), and I am sure Apple will add features within the OS to integrate it more into the menu bar, etc.

"There's no such thing as bad publicity"

They did it on purpose, to spark controversy, create buzz and clicks, instigate youtube videos and for brand identity. It reality has no practical use (except the aforementioned marketing points) and it is hideous...

A lot of people don’t like the notch. Just make a hole for the camera, even very cheap Android phone does that.

The notch is not just for the webcam, but for sensors and most likely FaceID in the next refresh - which will require more space. Display lids do not have the depth of smart phones, so lenses and sensors may need more lateral space.
