I think Apple could easily avoid "Notchgate" by doing the following:

1. When presenting the new MacBooks, talk about the problem of menu commands not available while in full screen mode.
2. Talk about the unused space of the bezel.
3. Present the innovative idea of moving the menu bar up to the bezel, allowing access to the full 10X16 screen

In addition modify the user interface as follows:
1. Force black background of the menu bar.
2. Allow applications to disable the menu bar in full screen mode, but the system will replace it by black bars.
3. The apps will be able to display informative text in such a case, but will not be able to alter the color of the bar.

If Apple would have proceeded in such a way, the "notch" would stop to be a notch as it would have never be visible.

100%, if they did this, I think it would dispel a lot of confusion around the notch. We get it, but do the masses? probably not.

Yup, Apple already properly explained how it was being implemented in the actual event video, but I guess some people didn’t bother to watch.
I don't think they showed the before and after transition, people seem to think the notch impedes on visual real-estate, they didn't show how it improved and expanded the real estate from before to after.
