Ok what features could Apple update the amazingly just announced MBP next year ?

My top 4

#1. WiFi 6E
#2. M2 Max CPU on 3nm
#3. a legit HDMI 2.1 port
#4. 64 Core GPU

As the m1 pro/max chips are only apples 2nd iteration of mac chips, i wouldn't be surprised if we keep getting big performance gains year over year. I'm sure performance is what most people look forward to when upgrading. Also, apple left enough space in the notch for a face id sensor 👍

I'm really disappointed there was no FaceID or cellular option. I guess FaceID and AR stuff next year along with performance bump?

I personally don't think we ever get Face ID, they already have the spot on the keyboard for Touch ID and it has a lot more use on the iPhone for focusing the selfie camera, those memojis that they love etc. It would also add cost and complexity to the screen assembly, requiring all kinds of authentication/re-pairing nightmares if you got a screen replacement. With touch ID the sensor is also right next to where your hands already are to operate the machine.

I still want them to bring back a removable blade SSD and upgradeable ram. 😑
It would be so nice to start laptop like this out at 1 TB and 16 GB of ram, and then gradually spec it out as the years pass and at a pace that is affordable to the end user.....

AND by the way, both of these new laptops are chunkers relative to previous generations, so we know that the soldered on SSD isn't about thinness now--it`s about locking us in, so if we want to upgrade, we just have to buy a whole new damn device...😭..... This business model certainly worked well for their iPhone profits.....

Updated Silicon is a given, and I think FaceID is eventually inevitable. We can probably also expect any hardware updates to things like HDMI, BT and WiFi. I don't think we should expect substantial design or hardware updates every year or even every other year. This is a computer and not an iPhone.

The M1 Macs are still selling well and running circles around the competition. This in combination with the chip shortage and fact Apple hasn't migrated their entire line over to Apple Silicon, makes me think we won't see upgrades annually. Personally, I think Apple will keep consumer products (Macs, home items, AirPods, wearables, etc.) in the Fall, and then pro products (iPad Pro, Pro Macs, etc.) in the Spring. This trend has more or less held true in recent years, and allows them to stagger releases. Consumer products sell better around the holidays, but pro users will upgrade regardless of time of year if they need the performance to get the job done.

This would mean M2 Macs (Mini, Air, iMac) next fall, with the Air getting a redesign and maybe the Mini too. If Apple sticks to their transition timeline, the Mac Pro will need to see new silicon by next fall. If they release the Mac Pro prior to next summer, I think it will be a souped up version of the M1 Pro/Max. If by next Fall, perhaps it will be a souped up version of the M2 Pro/Max, since the M1 family of chips will be 2 years old by next fall. Then we'll see the M2 Pro/Max in the MBP in Spring 2023, which gives it an 18 month shelf life and is reasonable given the M1 MBA and Mini will likely be 18-24 month old models.

M2 Pro
5G
1TB SSD standard
Waterproof design -> I don’t know why this isn’t a thing, I wasted too many MacBooks by spoiling water on them 😐
Keyboard keys with a screen on them so you can change keyboard layout whenever you want -> one can dream

They'll probably add Face ID next year
They probably will, but to be honest - I don't see the advantage.

For login, you open the laptop and Face ID logs you in. Great, so you save one touch.

For purchases/downloads/system authentication - Face ID has no benefit. Alert pops up - then you will still have to push a button to actually give authorization. With Touch ID touching the button is your authorization. It is the same number of steps, nearly identical in speed.

I think the "bigger" feature for the notch space will be center stage. It is super nice for zoom calls on the new iPad's.

Other than that, more speed. Maybe bumping 1TB as the base storage level. HDMI 2.1. Wifi 6E. I don't see Apple having a huge upgrade year over year, mostly just a refresh.

A single USB-A connector would be handy. I actually cared more about that than HDMI (which I use infrequently enough that I don’t mind a dongle) and SD (I use CFexpress cards). But for USB, it is quite common that I need to use an old-style USB stick, either mine or someone else’s. The M1 mini has them, as does the Mac Pro, so it’s not like they have totally shunned them. Now with the wider case, it should fit.

I do wonder how they’re going to manage the M chip (or chips) with the Mac Pro since that’s usually the computer to be user-upgradeable. Regarding M2 and features beyond, I bet they’ll start to be incremental rather than radical or ‘game changer’ in the next few years, aside from performance bumps; FaceID, better speakers/microphone, maybe some minor redesigns.

That's easy. An M2 Air. A laptop that more than adequately serves the vast majority of users at a “featured” over $1,000 savings.

FaceID, adopt ARMv9, 3nm SOC, smaller notch, more AS native apps, quality AAA games for AS
