Come on, you are comparing the Amazon tablet to the iphone. The Iphone is a worldwide event. Amazon isn't. Go see how many news articles you can find on both the iphone and Amazon tablet. For every Amazon news article, you will find hundreds of iphone articles. Go to the forums and see how many Amazon tablet/iphone posts you see. If people were half as interested in the Amazon tablet, info would have leaked but nah, people don't care enough about the Amazon tablet. Maybe a few care about the Amazon tablet, the majority of people care about the iphone and hence a new thread on the iphone in this forum shows up every minute. I haven't seen that with the Amazon tablet.

The iPhone has had 4 years to gather momentum and mind share.

Of course more people are interested in what the next version will be.

Amazon seem to have hit a home run with their tablet, and I think it will be interesting to see how it effects the market over the next year. I certainly don't think it will completely fail like all the other Android tablets.

And of course you haven't seen a new thread on the Amazon tablet appear every minute, this is a website dedicated to all things Apple.

This is Quantity vs Quality

So many articles have been posted about the iPhone throughout tech sites, but at this point what do we know? Not much, but why does Apple get more coverage, internet traffic/ad revenue. Mention Apple or iPhone in your headline and your guaranteed that internet traffic. I'm not saying that the next iPhone has no hype, of course it does, but just because you see more news report about it doesn't mean that the hype is greater than other products.

So you don't think MG Siegler actually having used an Amazon tablet almost a month before it was announced, and then reported of the look and feel, as well as Ryan Block describing that it "will look like a PlayBook -- because it basically is." Do these not count as a leaks? Because at this point the next iPhone hasn't leaked either, yet we had more accurate information about the Amazon tablet than we do of the next iPhone.

Here is a link to Ryan Block's article from Monday (2 days before the Kindle Fire was announced).

While I agree that a lot of the iphone news is quantity and not quality but the hype is plain crazy. No product I have ever known has had this kind of hype. I personally think the Amazon tablet will be a home run. As a matter of fact, I'm buying one because at $199 it's the perfect price for a tablet as it's really an extra.

You are probably right but I haven't heard of it myself until I saw it on the news discussion page.

Hell... Amazon just did the same thing with their highly anticipated tablet with no leaks whatsoever.

Perhaps because people were more interested in the price point than the hardware. Amazon aren't known as hardware innovators like Apple are. They aren't known for their industrial tech design. Plus the hype for the iphone is a tad larger than for the kindle fire.

The hype just depends on what technology circle you follow.

I waited in line for 5 hours to get my iPad 2 and for me it was justified because I got one, but when a friend tells me he wants to wait in line to get a video game for the XBox, I tell him he's crazy.

If you follow Apple products then the hype will seem greater than others, but Portal managed to sell almost 4 million units of its game in just a few days, it took Apple almost 30 days to sell just 1 million units of its first iPad (and the iPad had been rumors for almost 7 years before it was finally released).

Microsoft's Kinect managed to sell 8 million units in just 60 days, making it the fastest-selling electronic device in history and entering the Guinness Book of World Records.

It looks like we're going to get a re-designed iPhone 5, not a "4s". The real story here is how Apple kept the design secret for so long with virtually no leaks, to the point where people today even refuse to believe that Apple will announce it in a few days.

You have half the journalists in the world trying to dig up anything on iPhone 5, half the boneheads on Wall Street doing channel checks, half the Internet spreading gossip among themselves, and still nobody has anything substantial.

Whoever is in charge of Apple secret keeping should be given a job at the CIA. Seriously, do you know how hard it is to make 10 million units without any word getting out??? Just amazing.

Because they never made 10 million. They've only made one and it's in their lab.

I don't find it that surprising. We are talking about Apple, a constantly growing company beating almost every enemy it has faced. However, I find it strange Apple hasn't yet given us some fake stolen iPhone. That'd have created even more hype probably. But we have had mockups for months...only Tim knows whar's going on.

You can't compare a product that costs less than a hundred bucks to one that costs at a minimum five hundred.

As to this being the best kept secret, the 4th will tell if it is or it's just vaporware.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

If there will be an iPhone 5, then Apple did an absolutely wonderful job of disinformation.

You know what would be funny though? If Apple did nothing except protect it's factories and it was all media and fans that started this turmoil of countering rumours.

Exactly, if Apple does have a re-design, it will be an epic release for us all. it is a huge undertaking to keep it on such a down low, if that's in fact what they are doing. I'll be happy with whatever we get, but new hardware would be great.

My post and comparison was based on Hype, not Cost.

Microsoft doesn't get as much coverage as Apple, so you wouldn't think their product would be in high demand, yet they managed to sell 8 million units of the Kinect in just 60 days.

Campbell's soup doesn't get much hype either, but I bet they sell more cans than apple does iPhones.

Just like how Apple kept the iPad 2 a secret. This is the hope i'm riding on for the iPhone 5, otherwise it'll be a disappointing event.

I would surely be disappointed too if its just a spec bump, but either way a new iphone will be great nonetheless :). Lets just hope these guys are being super secretive, and blow us away on tuesday
