Lately my Ultra has been charging overnight to 80% which is fine for me most every day. But, yesterday I was planning a long (75K) bike ride so wanted the watch fully charged when I set out. When I put the watch on the charger the night before I was going to set it to charge to full, but was surprised to see it was already set that way. OK. Fine. The next morning it was charged to 100% and I still had 50% when the ride ended.

Today I will spend most of the day in the car, so I don't need 100%. Sure enough, when I got up this morning the watch was charged to just 80%

How did it know that I needed a full charge yesterday, but not today?

BTW, I took the following photo half way through the ride when I stopped at an elephant sanctuary for a cappuccino and croissant.

How often does your watch just charge to 80% or just charge to 100% ? I smell confirmation bias. You are counting the one hit (because it’s ‘strange’) but forgetting all the misses (because they aren’t strange…which means the hit wasn’t strange either).

Well, I don't keep careful records, but I rarely see it charge to 100%. That makes confirmation bias even more likely, doesn't it?

this watch feature takes into account these things:

1 the time that you place your watch on the charger to begin the charge (as in, start to charge at 23:00 versus 19:00)

2 the amount of battery you have left, currently (as in 45% or 60%)

3 the location you are at (as in, your "usual" location or not)

4 if you most frequently use your watch more some time later that same night (such as use it while you are sleeping to track sleep or not)

5 i think honza1 's reply also does factor into it as well. the time for when the watch (or the iPhone) sets as the target time for optimized charging to be ending at does look at the time you have set to wake up in the morning.
did you have an alarm set for an earlier than start time than usual? or, conversely, a later start time set for the other day?

nice photo by the way.

For the most part I lead a very regular life. Watch on the charger at 8:00 PM. Amount of charge left doesn’t vary much from 40%, unless I’ve done an unusually long workout.

On this occasion I was in a different location. I’m usually at my residence in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. However, I also usually spend five or six nights a month at my condo in Cha Am, Thailand. The night before this ride was my fifth of six nights in Cha Am.

I never use my watch after I hit the sack until I get up. When I’m at home I get up at 4:15 AM. When I’m in Cha Am I get up at 5:30 AM. I never use an alarm to wake up. I do have Do Not Disturb set for 8:30 PM to 5:30 AM.

I was lucky to get the elephant photo. The sanctuary is massive and the elephants usually feed far from the lodge and restaurant. That day they were marvelously close. Thanks.
