 What if this happens to my G5! I hope not, fingers crossed it will last for a bit more.
Apple got a lot of bad PR for the build quality of the G5s. But most of the one's that had those problems have already died.

My PowerMac G5 lasted eight years and three months of continuous use and being left on 24 hours a day seven days a week (at full power I might add, I never let it sleep). That was through power failures and heavy use which kept the CPU very busy.

If your G5 is alive right now I wouldn't worry. You have one of the few (like I did) that were built right.

In reverse order:

TiBook (1ghz) : after 9 years of service, graphics card problems (screen scrambles when pressure is applied to the bottom of the machine) still boots and its happily running OS9 as fast as ever, you just cant move it from the desk while its booted :)

iMac G3: failed caps in power supply and logic board, was a freebie anyway, parted out on eBay

Mac IIsi, MacIIci, Classic II, Classic II (2nd one): Failed power supplies parted out on eBay.

The Beige G3 266, a 7100, a 6100/66, a IIfx, a MacSE30 and an Apple IIc are all still kicking :)

In July of last year my 2004 PowerBook G4 started freezing and after a few times I would get a kernel panic. I was totally ignorant to Mac hardware at the time and chalked it up to a bad hard drive. Upon replacing the HD the machine would not turn on at all and the power light on the charger stayed green all the time.

Eventually I replaced the logic board and coupled with the new HD the machine is back working again.

The odd thing is that I subsequently have tried the old drive in other machines and in a FW enclosure on the PowerBook and each time I get the same kernel panic.

Could it be that the logic board and HD died simultaneously? Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.

My PowerBook G3 Wallstreet died of a bad PRAM battery and I didn't feel like taking the time to fix a 11 year old laptop
My iBook G3 died of bad graphics chip and dead hard drive
My iBook G4 died of bad graphics chip

Totally possible. My HD died a short while before my logicboard died. It was a precursor to my logicboard dying that I didn't pay attention to.

My mirror door g4 had all of its hard drives fail. It can work but the last remaining hd is corrupt and the machine runs so slow its insane.

Also the temp regulator died and now it's perpetually running its already super loud fans at Max speed. It's louder than a vacuum cleaner and slower than a g3 that sits in my basement somewhere.
