For the 3GS, back in 2009, I preordered one from my local, mall-based, AT&T store on the first day of preorders. Reserved my 32GB model with the quickness and paid it in full. Come release day, walked into that store during my lunch break from work (and I don't/didn't work in the mall) and picked it up.
I remember the iPhone specialist in that AT&T store telling me that several people had tried to come in on launch day and buy one, but they only had a few that weren't reserved already. He swapped out my sim card from my original iPhone, had me sign the "2 year commitment" and I was out. Only change incurred to my plan was data from $20/month to $30/month going from original to 3GS. I didn't have to wait in line to preorder, nor to pickup my iPhone 3GS. I passed on the 4 when it released last year though. But I do plan on buying the 5 from the same AT&T store, on the first day of preorders, if possible. Luckily for me, there's an Apple Store in the same mall, as well as several (like 4 or 5) AT&T stores in my area as well, in case the need arises.
