I have a template where the left side of the page is at the top, and as I type, the words go down instead of left to right. The layout is precise and I don't want to alter anything but I would like to view it left to right while I work. Selecting horizontal page orientation under document makes it loose the formatting. I tried copying to a horizontal doc and that didn't work either, just crammed it all together.

#2 is right: share key info for help.

I'm going to make wild guesses...

I'll assume the template is a PDF that is apparently rotated right 90 degrees so that the "left" side of a page is displaying at the top and the top side of the page is displaying at the right, etc.

A Pages app way
  • Open the free Pages app and a portrait blank template page.
  • In File menu, switch mode to Page Layout mode.
  • Drop the PDF template onto the page.
  • In the right bar (controls), click the "Arrange" tab
  • In the Rotate area, change Angle to 90º to rotate the page 90 degrees "left" to correct the orientation as I surmise you want it. Now top of the PDF is "up" and left side of page is "left. Etc.
  • Size the PDF template up to full size and position it accordingly.
  • Then you can either fill it in or "print" it as a PDF in this adjusted orientation.
Alternatively,
  • Open the PDF in the free Preview app
  • In the small group of icon controls at the top right near the search bar, one looks like a square with a curved arrow above it. If you hover a mouse pointer over it for a little while, it will be identified as "rotate left."
  • Click that once and what is PDF top pointing right will now rotate to pointing "up" and what was PDF left pointing up will now be rotated to pointing left.
If the template is an image, both of the above options will rotate images too.

If the template is something else that both of the above can't handle, identify what kind of template file you are wanting to rotate (particularly what file type) and in what app you want to work with it (and/or what app you use that opens it now).

I am sorry, I didn't mention that I am using Apple Pages. It's a template for a CD cover, the front cover on the bottom, and back page of a booklet on top. When I type, everything is perfect if I tilt my head 90 degrees to my right shoulder. When I try to copy to horizon the template just stacks on top of itself and looses its layout.

Thank you so much for this incredibly helpful solution! My friend was facing the same issue with rotating a PDF template in Apple Pages, and thanks to your detailed steps, he was able to solve it with ease. The guidance on using both Pages and Preview made it even more versatile. We truly appreciate your help!

For a relatively lightweight app, Pages is quite versatile. And that "page layout mode" is often overlooked but makes it a pretty great- but relatively simple- DTP app with most of the most-needed core DTP capabilities. I've moved clients to "go Mac" simply to be able to use native Pages (app) for their publishing. I know of nothing on the PC side that is the same mix of DTP powerful but relatively simple too.
