These are the possible results that I saw could happen and how they help the net:
1) he would get it was a joke and stop asking people ... problem solved
2) he would spend all his free time trying to decipher something he would never figure out ... problem solved
3) he would type in the wrong command (I told him to sudo anything) and mess up his network settings, thereby keeping him off the net ... problem solved
4) he would figure out the right command (but telling an interface it is a different IP would cause packets and connects to go into the ether) and not get on the net ... problem solved
If he knew what he was doing he would not be asking the question. It could have been worse, I could have spent the time to type out a command that would do that on every time his computer startup sequence ran so even rebooting would not help.
Basically what I did was hand a loaded gun with the barrel pointed backwards to someone bent on smashing things and looking for a club.
I am not against helping someone with a question, far from it. I am used to having to spray raid on websites though so as soon as I see someone trying to evade an IP ban I give them EXACTLY what they asked for and do not point out what they literally asked to do is not what they want. Of course, it could just be a case of mistaken identity and they were given a new IP number that someone else raked through the mud before them, but in that case the reasonable thing to do is to say 'why was I banned?' to the owner of the site.
