Oddly enough, I found this simpler to figure out when I had a PC, as I just connected my iphone and used iTunes to move things around. It populated with all my sounds, and was quite easy.

I've since moved to mac, and can't quite figure it out ...

If I connect to my phone using music ( I assume this is the way now ), it only shows a handful of tones that I can't seem to access or move. I'm trying to move a saved ringtone from my iPhone to my gf's iPhone. I originally saved this somewhere in the main iPhone ringtone section, so it doesn't show in my files.

If anyone can assist, it would be appreciated. Ty!

You used to be able to access the user-made ringtones in iTunes but with the new macOS versions adding a ringtone is a one-way process by dropping it on the iPhone Finder window when it's attached.

Get the iMazing app. You can access the ringtones with the trial version. *Use at your own risk.

iMazing looks like it would do the trick.
That said, is it risky? Not seeing the native app on the store ... does Apple not approve it?

Trust pilot seemed to love the app, so went ahead.
Worked like a charm.

Use a YouTube to mp3 converter, it converts the music videos to songs. Save that to your computer and crop the section you want.

I think it is not possible to download Itunes for m1 macbook now... ;/

This is how I did it. I used this to put a custom ring tone on my phone without even using a computer.

So now I have V’s ringtone from Cyberpunk 2077.

I know it's an old post but in case anyone will come across it, I've also had this problem and found the best way to deal with ringtones between iPhone and Mac right now is to use iMazing app (I have no connection to them).
It should be freaking embarrassing for Apple, that a 3rd party utility, even in its "free" mode, easily allows you to copy ringtones to and from iPhone.

I've literally tried everything else people suggested online, like copying in Finder, etc, all to no avail.
Connected iPhone with a cable, opened iMazing - Data - Ringtones - easy. It warned that it wouldn't work with iOS 18.0.1, I just closed that warning and proceeded, all worked without any issues.

In case someone will want to add ringtones to iPhone, make sure they are .m4r files. Essentially it's an m4a file that you can rename to m4r and it will work, with a length under 40s. Some say under 30, but I have ringtones 40s and they work.

P.S. Apparently that iMazing app will even work via WiFi, if you enable it in Preferences. Not sure if this feature in any way connected to that Finder (and previously iTunes) "Show this iPhone when on Wi-Fi" feature, but I have it enabled too.

I am a long time iMazing app fan as well for ringtones, but you don't have to use it anymore. Here's my compete procedure on creating and using ring tones, because I have perfected this little procedure I make new ring tones of my favorite tunes, from whatever segment of the song I prefer, all the time!

  • Find a Youtube video of the song you're interested in - best quality, live or studio, etc. I have yet to find a song that was not on there!
  • From Youtube, use a downloader utility to download the MP4 video (I use the one from Parallels tools, YMMV)
  • Create an iMovie project - add the MP4 media. Go to File/Share/File, save audio only as MP3
  • Import the MP3 file into Apple Music
  • Find the file in Apple Music's “Recently added”. Go to Info/Options - make it 30-40 seconds long (this is about the longest that works for iPhone ring tones) - pick the right part of the song for a ring tone (listen to it). You do this by moving the sliders around for start and end of the segment you are interested in, in seconds. You can then listen to the segment to get it exactly right.
  • Change the song title etc. as desired
  • When happy with the 30-40 second clip, File/Convert/Create Apple Lossless version
  • Go to the Finder location of the file in your Music folder (Right-click the song, Get Info, go to File tab to see location), copy the file to the desktop, and change the m4a extension to m4r
  • Go back to the original song, to Get Info/Options, and uncheck the start/stop that created a shortened second version (just so you can preserve the original song you added to Apple Music, uncut)
  • Connect iPhone to MacBook Pro. Make sure the Finder window is on the General tab of the iPhone device selected from the left-hand pane in Finder.
  • From the file folder of the .m4r music file, drag the .m4r file to the pane under the General tab in Finder, for the phone - wait until a very fast progress bar completes at the bottom of the pane (the same works for iPad)
That’s it! Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics/Ringtone, (Settings/Sounds/Ringtone on iPad)and you will see the new ringtone there! It may take a minute to show up.
