I think it asks you if it doesn't know. Once you tell it then in the future, like any normal human, it remembers.

Ok, I was thinking it was a feature of the contacts, like a field I could fill in ahead of time.

I believe right off the bat you can start Siri and say:

Matt K is my father.
Joe K is my brother.

etc
