How do I delete music on ipad 2?

It's making me nuts. I have a lot of music on my ipad I want to get rid of. Syncing with itunes does not help. Anybody have a solution?
 
Highlight the song you want to delete, swipe to the left, and the red delete button will appear on the right of the screen.
