Every time I turn my camera on, it’s turned back on. It’s not in the settings menu. This is clearly some nonsense that started when I updated to OS12 and it’s really annoying that I have to manually turn it off every time I want to take a picture of something. Why would anyone think this is a cool feature in the first place? Damn I miss Steve Jobs.

Settings -> Camera -> Preserve settings -> Live Photo

I don't know... Live photos doesn't do any harm. I actually like making cinemagraphs...

Doesn’t do that on mine, if I turn it off in the camera app it stays off. Maybe report it to Apple as a bug?

It’s fine until you want to send pics of your kids to your parents that don’t have apple devices. All they get are movie clips not images that they can’t open.

What are you using to send them? When I mms them or email them they are sent as normal jpgs or pngs.

Are you using a 3rd party app?

If I send it animated it gets sent as a gif

99% of the pictures that people send me are live pictures
99% of them didn’t need to be live pictures

It’s not about it needing or not needing to be a Live Photo. You set it and forget. It looks nice when scrolling through your pictures and sometimes you can make something funny with it. Or it just catches the moment before the shot. That’s all. You don’t have to 3D Touch every photo you get.

Email normally.

Apple mail or some 3rd party app?

EDIT: I just did this myself using apples mail app on the iPhone. I created a new email and attached an image known to be a “live” photo. Sent it to one of my other email accounts. I even selected the “send full size” option.

On the receiving end the file was a *.jpeg file. Not a movie or a Live Photo.

Not true, IOS will send live photos as JPEG. Only if you access with PC you can see live photos as clips.

Even then, if you move the photo out of the Mac Photos app (and into the desktop or another app) the Live Photo is converted to a *.jpeg file

Not sure bat as I remember windows c/p will transfer them as video format. I'm using windows 7 maybe it's different with windows 10.

So I’m just stuck with this nonsense unless I revert to OS11? Well guess I’m reverting to OS11.

Here is a screenshot of the setting (in iOS 12):

Very simple to have it permanently disabled as was mentioned.

I already have preserve settings turned on - that has nothing to do with this.

Unfortunately reverting isn't a possibility anymore since OS11 is unsigned, I was hoping the recent update would cure it but nope - still doing it. So far the only work-around I've found is to leave my camera in "square" mode. This is such a shame. I don't know what happened to Apple but they're really dropping the ball here.

Did you have Live disabled when you turned on preserve settings?
