How do I disable the optical drive from firing up every time I open my MB?

I haven't used a mac regularly since my Apple II plus in 1980. I have a new MB. it bothers me that every time I open my notebook from the sleep state, the optical drive spins a bit and makes noise. My system is otherwise silent (SSD). Is there a way of disabling that?

Only by physically removing the cable from the drive - bit drastic but if you never use the optical drive and the noise really annoys you...
