How do I disable the start up sound?

I'm referring to the two second sound that comes whenever you hit the power button. Is there any way to disable it?

I use my MBP in lectures and had the same problem. If you mute the MBP before turning it off then the sound doesn't play at start up. I tend to use sleep mode now though (it doesn't play when it wakes from sleep).

Not a true solution, but just hit "mute" before you shut down your computer. I've tried using the startupsound sys pref, but it didn't work for me in the past.
