and other types of files...directly to my iPad 10.5 Pro without using a crutch like iCloud? There seems to be no such facility in Firefox, Chrome. or Safari?

I've tried a couple of those...they don't seem to be able to download directly to my new iPad.

Get the iCab browser, it does direct downloading.

Otherwise, I use to do it in Goodreader (through it's browser), but I imagine the Documents app does it too.

But check out iCab first.

I've tried a couple of those...they don't seem to be able to download directly to my new iPad.

If the video file is embeded in a website, you will need to use some workflow to filter out the embed URL and then download it. Check Workflow App for that.
