When I had my iBook I would just hover over a word and then press Option (maybe ctrl?)+ Apple+ D and a dictionary would pop up over the word but now after over a month of fiddling with the MacBook I just can't seem to get it to work again. Any suggestions?

It's command-control-D. Command-option-D turns Dock hiding on/off.

One thing that stops it from working is if the Dictionary application isn't in the Applications folder, so make sure it hasn't been moved elsewhere. Also check the Keyboard Shortcuts pane of the Keyboard & Mouse preferences pane in System Preferences to make sure the shortcut hasn't somehow been changed.
