RealMedia is extremely proprietary and can only be watched using Real's application.

You won't be able to watch RealMedia anywhere, including your iPod.

Nor can RealMedia be easily converted to a "good" format.

If you've got a RealMedia file, you're pretty stuck.

The only way I have found to do it so far is to re-record the clip using "Snapz Pro". It works but is VERY LABORIOUS. I also dont have the HD space to store the huge preliminary files created before compression. does ffmpeg do it? if so what are the settings?

I don't know but i think it's pretty hard to encode anything whatsoever Real Media related in Macs. Go Windows if you wanna encode real media into other formats. There're lots of program on the Windows side that can do it...I dunno i personally tried ffmpegX or whatsoever but it never worked out for me.
