Can I do this through system preferences or do I need special software?
Probably the wrong forum for this. Try an app like bonjour browser or angry IP scanner. Check the documentation to see if it ships with a default network configuration.
Another vote for AngryIP.
Depending on your router, there may be a DHCP table or list of devices there too.
On an iPhone: WiFiman is a nice tool...on the Discovery tab, shows every device on the network (wired and wireless)....assuming this network has wifi to join. I'm sure there are other tools too.
I found an app called discovery that works great.
