If you ignore the odd time remaining - does the install complete?
If you have a good install, with a working system - there's nothing that needs doing, except to run your software update to make sure all security updates, etc, are installed.

Which model is it and what's the hard drive?

Is there anything else other than a blank grey screen? Any sad face, do not enter symbol or anything else?

Without any info, it looks to be a hard drive problem.

i can't get past the installtion screen.

I think its hard drive problem. But Model: A1278 (2010?).

I cant get past the grey screen, no sad face, no enter symbol or nothing.

and after putting into recovery, it won't finish the installation. just stays with those negative numbers.

Do the numbers count up - or down as time goes on?
How long did you wait for it to finish? I would often let it go for 3 or 4 hours. You could even let it run through the night to see if it ever does complete.
I might think that 10 or 12 hours on a system install is likely too long, but that's just me …

If you already know that it won't finish, then - yes, it's a likely choice that the hard drive is failing. The recovery partition is also on the hard drive, which can easily explain why the recovery install won't complete.

I think you should run the extended hardware test from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Similar errors have been experienced with failing RAM and/or failing SSD/HDDs.

    13" or 15"?

    According to everymac.com, A1278 ranges from 2008 to 2011. I guess it's the family.

I used to have a 2011 15" and it had the grey screen. I though it was the hard drive also. But I was able to use target disk mode to boot another computer so I knew otherwise - it was Radeongate! :(
