What is the deal on uploading an avatar ... seeking the magic hand shake or qualification needed?

You need 500 posts.

Btw, Site and Forum Feedback (https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/site-and-forum-feedback.66/) is the proper place to ask such questions and discuss the "harsh" rule of having 500 "****ing" posts to have an avatar.
