I have a late 2008 MBA and want a refurbished 2009 MBAP because of the 7 hour battery, upgraded memory and faster processor speed. But where does Apple get all the refurbished items from? Do they take back defect items under warranty and fix them to sell as refurbished, or can I go to the Apple store and trade in my MBA and pay the difference for a refurb version?

Apple doesn't buy back notebooks. Refurbs come from people returning items for various reasons.

Sell your MB here, eBay, or Craigslist.

They aren't going to buy your computer, at best they will replace it with a comparable one after three consecutive failures to fix the same problem.
