I got an email last night from Apple stating that my app had been approved and was now for sale in the app store.

That's great but I typed in a few search words that I included in the submission and you have to go quite a bit down the list before my app shows up.
I tried two of my search terms and I was about 100 apps down and there seemed to be quite a few 'irrelevant' apps listed before mine - quite disappointing.

Are there any tricks to get an app listed higher up? i.e. if two apps had exactly the same search terms what would make one app appear higher up the list than the other?

There's a lot of good information that you can find with Google about this. Search for "App Store search optimization" or something like that. There are a lot of factors that affect your app's position in searches, including ranking.
