The question is pretty much in the title, it automatically dims it and I cant find the option in system prefs.

No, that dims it before screen saver.
What the OP wants is System Preferences > Displays

and what ever you do don't push the slider all the way to the left and left go (yeah you can still use the keys to adjust the screen but it's still startled me)...I can't believe he screen went black. Shouldn't there be a minimum of, say, 10%?
