When I first got my iPhone XR I was able to use haptic feedback to quick reply to a text on the lock screen. I just updated to the new operating system and it looks like that was either removed or I need to turn it back on.

Please say it wasn’t removed. That was my most useful feature.

I’m having the same issue in my iPhone 11 Pro Max

This isn't what the OP is referring to. OP is talking about responding to a message on the lock screen.

Then use passcode to unlock. Same principle applies.

I appreciate you trying to help but if I’m going to have to go through the trouble of entering my passcode every time I want to reply to a text, why wouldn’t I just use the Messages app?

The whole point of using haptic feedback on the lock screen is to send a quick reply.

iOS is working properly. Just go into Face ID & Passcode, diable FaceID and turn off passcode. And hope you never leave you phone unattended.

Yeah.... no. I’ll go to the Apple Store soon and hope they know how to get this functionality back.

It’s working perfectly as designed. The idea is that you can reply once you confirm you are the owner of the device.

Its know I’ve been the owner the past 12 months so....

Apple should tell you what “downgrading” to iOS 13 would do to your device.

You've probably checked this, but I didn't see it mentioned. What do you see for "Settings, FaceId & Passcode, "Allow Access When Locked", "Reply with Message"?

Thanks for the tip but reply with message was already turned on.

What I did just realize though is on the lock screen, if I swipe left on the text and hit view, it allows me to send a quick text back without unlocking my phone.

That worked in iOS 12 but it used to also let me just use haptic feedback to do the same thing.

Possibly crazy question - what happens if you do an "alternate appearance" under FaceID and do the facial recognition process wearing the type of mask you wear at work?

Then just do this. It's a tiny workaround but works.

I think iOS 12 is still being signed for downgrades as of right now. But not for long! And Face ID won’t work unless it sees a mouth, nose, and eyes.

how do I go back to iOS 12?
If you’re serious, you need to download the 12.4.1 .ipsw file for your iPhone model. Then, place your phone into DFU mode and use iTunes to restore to 12.4.1 by option-clicking on the restore button in iTunes, then navigating to the downloaded .ipsw file.

You need to do this quickly, before Apple stops signing 12.4.1.

I can still do this on my 6S on iOS 13 to reply to messages. Its turned on\off under Settings > Touch\Face ID & Passcode and under the "Allow access when locked" section there is "Reply with Message".

I dont have Face ID so unsure if it works differently if you do but i just force touch messages and can reply to them.

Yeah it seems to be an annoying change in iOS 13. Unless the phone detects your face, a haptic touch doesn't do anything. YET, I can swipe to the left and choose "View" and it brings up the reply window - even without unlocking the phone.

Guessing maybe it's a bug.

Yet my best friend who also has an XR and updated the OS doesn’t have this issue and she can still use haptic touch to quick reply to texts. Ugh!!!!!

Hour drive to the Apple Store here we go!
