Plug your ears and nose, and drink several gulps of water. You need someone to help you!

Or, like I did once. My daughter had the hiccups in the car. I slammed on the breaks and screamed. It worked. Ticked the wife off, but everyone else was laughing.

Yes, I very much second this suggestion above. Place a glass of water with a straw on a counter. Now drink while plugging your ears.

If that doesn't work, try some sort of concentration game. This one was actually designed to help cure hiccups!

I've always put a napkin over a glass of water and drunken the water through the glass... It seems to work for me.

edit: Wow, now that i think about it, it sounds really weird, but it hs worked for me before...

Interesting that people are suggesting holding your breath while gulping water. That always works for me, except that I sip the water slowly. Hasn't failed yet.

That just makes the water come out of my @$$ instead. :D

A friend of mine just showed me a trick and it always worked until now.

She came to me when I had a hiccup and told me I’d get 1 Euro for the next hiccup. I couldn’t do it anymore. I tried it with my wife and it worked, too. Now, whenever she has a hiccup, thinking she would get money for the next one is enough for her to stop.

Apologies for reviving a slightly old thread, but I thought I'd report back on this method after trying it out for myself. The missus had an attack of hiccups over the weekend so, remembering Veldek's tip, I promised her that she could have a Pound for the next one.

Her hiccups lasted for another ten minutes and you owe me a quid. :( ;)

This may sound really weird but it works for me....

take a steak knife and put it in a tall glass of water (blade down) then drink the glass of water.

Works everytime for me.

(I use an older steak knife, not one of my new ones)

I have two methods. First I try the holding your breath trick. I try it until I either hiccup again or I am about to passout. If I am about to passout, then they are gone. Otherwise I proceed to the second method. I take a spoon full of sugar dry and that works 100% of the time.

I'm going to assume that they're gone by now. ;)

However, there are only two valid ways that I know of to get rid of hiccups and one of them was listed (I was a bartender and in the restaurant business for 10 years). Vinegar should work-- but kinda nasty.

The second method which I have never seen NOT work and one that I handed out all the time from behind the bar was a wedge of lemon with bitters poured over it. You bite into and eat the lemon wedge.
