Some time ago I had an icon in the last row of my System Preferences for bootcamp. I could use it to boot into Windows. I thought maybe that Startup Disk replaced it but that is not the case.

So, is there supposed to be an icon there I can use to boot directly into Windows without having to catch the gray screen with the option key (or was it the command key) ?

As far as I know, there was never a official preference panel for Boot Camp. The only way to do it is to use the Startup Disk panel or hold Option on boot.

Now onto third party software, BootChamp does the job very nicely - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/28468/bootchamp/
