All I seem to get is one Mojave Finder window when double clicking my HD icon. Anyone know the way to get two in Mojave?

Thank you, dangerfish, I can't get two finder windows double clicking the main hard drive anymore.

dangerfish, do you know of a way to force Mojave Books stored pdfs to open in anything but Preview? Assigning apps w Apple+I does not work in Books.

Open a PDF on your desktop, select Command I and then change your default app to whatever you want. My default is PDF Pen.

That’s what I can’t figure out why some of us can assign PDFs in Apple Books, and some of us per MacRumors can’t. I have wiped my drive multiple times and migrated back. I still cannot open PDFs in PDF Expert from Apple Books.

This on a Mac.

After you do Command I and select PDF Expert, are you clicking the "Change All" button?

Yes, Ive done it for many years. but has no effect in Mojave within Books for me. Any pdf on a desktop or out of Books, will open in my editor. Not within Books

Just wiped the HD. Installed Mojave ONLY from internet. Installed PDF Expert.
Opened Pages, used a template to make a pdf, saved pdf to desktop.
Selected the pdf. Apple+I, "chose PDF Expert to open", then "open ALL pdfs w PDF Expert".
Closed pdf.
Double-Clicked the desktop PDF. PDF opens in PDF Expert. Closed.
Opened Apple Books. Drag desktop pdf into Books.
Double Click pdf in Books. Opens in Preview.
This proves only Apple Books is blocking PDF Expert.

Figured it out. When you command+n it opens a new tab in the finder window. If you want two windows right click on the tab and select open in new window.

With Finder selected ⌘N still produces a new window for me. More presses = more Finder windows.

Identical behaviour for other system apps such as Safari. More presses = more Safari windows.

Same goes for ⌘T - each press gets another tab in Finder, Safari etc.

Both shortcuts are displayed under the File drop-down menu.

You can set Finder (and many other apps) to default to sensible NO TAB behaviour by going to System Preferences > Dock > Prefer tabs when opening documents: and choosing Never or In Full Screen Only.

Pressing command N opens a new window on top of the already open one, the same as "open new finder window", and you cannot view the two windows at the same time.

It used to open a new separate window, but doesn't do that any more in Mojave 10.14.3

Help . . ! Thanks . . .

Same problem; having tabs to flip between two finder windows still does not enable you to work with two windows at the same time Grrr

Hi lady. Just grab the top of the second window and drag the window away from the first to the desktop. It’s like they are all nested using Command+n.

Thanks but the problem is that it doesn't open two windows any more, so I can't drag the second window away because I can only ever see one finder window.
With the one finder window visible, there is a <> symbol in the top left corner with which you can flip between the two open finder windows, but not have both visible simultaneously

You have the finder window set at full screen. Can you grab the bottom corner of this huge window and drag diagonally inward, reducing the size of this huge nested finder window? Or go up to VIEW, hide or stop full screen window?

You need to be creating smaller finder windows.

I promise you the issue is the window is being created full screen, I’m fading fast tonite. I hope you get it resolved.

Another way for a second window, (assuming the resource you want is on the Finder sidebar) Command+click on the folder you want in the new window. I keep my most often accessed folders on the sidebar. You can also Command+click on a networked computer in the sidebar and it opens in a new window.
