How do I hide desktop icons?

How do I hide desktop icons?
I was searching for ways, but it seems that was with older versions because I can't find a general button under preferences on my imac.
I found how to change the size of them and arrange them, but I can't find a way to hide them....
Help?

What icons are there? If they're ones you put there, you can simply move them off the desktop.

Just a bunch of screenshots and saved pictures desktop icons are all over my background. How do I move them off the desktop other than trash? I don't want to delete them.... I just want them not to show up as desktop icons.

Download the app that I told you to. It will hide everything. and it's free.

Just create a folder and drag them all into that folder. Then, if you don't want the folder on your desktop, you can move it wherever you like.

Right-click on the Desktop and select "New Folder"

command+shift+N also does a pretty good job.

And drag this new folder onto the Dock and your desktop will be free and clear!

You are aware that when you make these screen grabs or save a file, you can specify a location for this, don't you? It doesn't have to be saved to the Desktop. All of my downloads go to my downloads folder on the Dock, for example.

Why are you saving to the desktop rather than the downloads (or other) folder?
