When I get my new MBA I plan to install Windows 7 in a VMware Fusion virtual machine. I assume but have not definitively had confirmed that Windows can be installed in a virtual machine using the Superdrive. Is this right? It appears to me now that the most straightforward way to install Windows on an MBA would be to get a superdrive, certainly better than going through all of the machination required to do it via a USB drive.

As an alternative, would I be able to connect an MBA to my MBP and use my MBP's optical drive to install Windows on the MBA? Any insights will be gratefully received.

all you have to do is insert the disk into the USB port.
(Warning-do not actually try this... it doesn't work, no matter how hard you try or wish(unfortunately))

The SuperDrive will allow you to install Windows 7 as if you had a drive built in.

When you have the disk in Mac OS the VM will be able to use it as well. You have 3 options:

    1. You can use the external superdrive and a normal Windows DVD
    2. You can use remote disk sharing and use the MBPs DVD-ROM
    3. You can make an image of the disc on your MBP, transfer that over and install from that image.
