Never judge whether you can afford something by looking at your available credit. You don't need it now. It's a long term want. If you cannot budget and set aside enough money to buy it outright in a few months, then you cannot afford it.

I agree with iBlue, if you can afford to pay it of over 6-12 months then I say go and treat yourself.

oh and off topic but on the the subject of debt... Debt is only a problem if you can not afford to pay it off...

This is how you get in trouble. If you can't afford to pay it off when the bill comes due, you need to pass.

Hmmmmmm sure I mentioned that debt is only a problem if you can't pay it off... Yup just checked my post and I did put that.

Credit cards are evil.

On the subject of your MIM Strat, ever think about modifying it yourself? I use a MIM Strat as a back up to my American, after swapping out the standard single coils w/Fender Vintage Noiseless and a Seymour Duncan, tuning pegs w/Schaller locking tuners, tremolo with a standard american trem, pick guards and pup covers with black perl.

I've sanded the paint down (but haven't settled on a finish yet) and will possibly be replacing the neck with one from Warmoth as well.

In the end, it'll still just be a MIM Strat with MIA hardware, but it sounds as good as my Americans (sometimes better), and has its own identity. A pretty fun project too.

All of this stuff is available from Fender, and a plethora of online music shops.

sorry - I'm a sucker for guitar talk.

Over what period of time?

The % of the apr also comes into play here. If his apr is 5%, thats not a big deal as if the apr was 35%.

I look at possible debt as being good debt and bad debt. Good debt would be student loans or a home loan. Bad debt, anything I could've bought if I saved for a few months more.

Everyone has there opinions on how a credit card should be used.

I am on the side of the people that say, "If you can't pay it off when the bill comes at the end of the month then you should not be buying it."

I just recently got my first credit card and it has come in very handy a few times. With me not working full time in the winter but still needing to pay rent and the like, it was easier to put groceries and stuff on the credit card. Then i would pay rent and bills with the money in the checking account to make sure that was all taken care of. After that i would use the rest of the money to pay off the credit card. I have only had my card about 6 months but i have NEVER carried a balance over to the next month.

I would say that if you can not pay for the guitar outright in 3 months then don't buy it. Just save your pennies and make due for a little while longer.

Hmmm, seems I started a credit war in this thread. Being out in the sticks, there's times when I can only get things via credit card. Debt doesn't bother me anyway. I'm single, no ties, so I can pay it off.

I've got my eye on a black Gibson SG now too. You can get some nice fat bluesy sounds out of one of them. I'll have made a decision by tomorrow anyway. If I'm going to order anything I'll want it here before the weekend so I can spend my bank holiday playing my fingers into bleeding stumps. Thanks for the advice peeps.

Like I said before, go for it. But want to see pictures of it in the latest purchase thread :D

Don't do it unless you actually have the money. The only time you should use a credit card is when you can pay it off BEFORE the month is over.
