I have resorted to using TextExpander (which counts characters) and then copy/paste into SMS Messaging. Annoying to have to do extra work.

SMS with other carriers

I would like to see some sort of counter. I like the way the iPhone handles the messages with one seemingly large SMS but the problem I (and my wife who uses a Razr) encounter is with other carriers. When we send texts to other At&t or t-mobile phones, it works as expected, no problem.

When either of us send our daughter-in-law who is with V*****n texts that exceeds 160 chars, she only gets the first text and none of the ones following. We have to know how long the text is so we can either keep in under the 160 limit or manually send 2+ texts. Easy for my wife's razr because it keeps track but not my iPhone.

jailbreak your iphone and use bitesms.

it gives you a counter and even a cancel button if you decide to not send a text during mid-send. it also timestamps every text unlike the iphones completely random and sporadic timestamping.

apple are basically morons.

the iphone is a giant piece of garbage were it not for jailbreaking.

This is another one of those little things that apple overlooked. I woudl also like them to unlimit the phone call history. The history should go back at least 12 months and not 20 calls.

Yes, and the info should be expanded upon, why not let us see call details like duration and time/date for more than 1 call per contact?

for jailbroken phones theres an app called sms helper, that turns the send button into a x/160 counter whilst typing, and turns back into 'send' after a few seconds of no typing, I find this solution perfectly neat and usable. Either this or colour changing or such would be neat enough and unobtrusive for apple to use.. wish they'd get on it, but they clearly don't seem to care.

You guys ever think that Apple and AT&T (or carriers in general) have a deal going on?

Carriers make money when people go over. As mentioned, an SMS counter wouldn't be hard to implement or ruin the UI, AT&T may have asked Apple not to display a counter. Then in return, AT&T cuts Apple slack in not having "Media Mall" or whatever displayed on the iPhone.

Just saying. A counter seems more of a necessity (unlike MMS) and its odd how Apple still hasn't given in.

Same thing with Palm Pres. I somehow doubt they 'overlooked' these features and its more likely a deal with carriers.

With all the corporate greed today, this could be true.

The iphone is the only phone I have ever used (that supports sms) which doesn't have a built in counter. I can't believe apple overlooked it. Even worse, 3 updates later (4th prolly coming soon) and still nothing.

While I don't mind as I don't come close to go over my texting plan, my friends are always complaining that I go over by only a few characters and they end up with 2 texts. I explain to them that my phone doesn't have a counter and they laugh at me. "Wait, your $600 phone doesn't count the characters for you?" or sometimes, "That's what you get for buying an apple".

Apple, please fix this!!! I'm trying to get friends to switch over, but you're not making it easy!!

The newest update of the iphone has a character count on it. You have to go to Settings, Messages, then at the bottom it says "character count." switch it to yes. Once you have a message that has gone down one row the **/160 will show up below the "send" button.

hope i helped.
