No, not every school uses the same technology. Many don't have the budget and are operating on older hardware and software. It's not reasonable to assume that everyone is using current technology.
Schools don't have the budget for anything anymore, they lay it on the parents. They don't ask for CD drives, they ask the kids to bring USB drives.

Why is this thread extending over two pages now?

My post pretty much answered his question.

The thread hasn't extended over two pages yet, and you're not the only one who has something to say. Just because you post what you think is the answer, others have just as much right to respond.

You would be looking for a DVD drive - in non Apple form they are relatively inexpensive. Why would you want one ? - I use mine to on occasion to copy critical files or data as a backup to the more practical USB drive. Shelf life of DVD's will probably out live the ability to find a reader in 10 years.

Two pages in my browser ...
Read the OPs question. I gave the only answer.

Keep reading. That wasn't the only question asked by the OP, nor was yours the only appropriate answer to the second question asked. You skipped right over the first one.

This doesnt really help the OP. He stated that he needs the optical for school.
I havent used a optical drive in about a decade but I do run into these problems at work.
My boss uses 3'5 floppy discs ....

If my boss was using floppy discs I would quit

I thought the same when I brought my Macbook Air but don't really miss it and if I need one I use the one that I connected to my IMac :) Technology of discs is beginning to die slowly because most things can be downloaded now.

For Apple's DVD prices you can buy mobile Blu-Ray burners. If you've removed the optical drive from a Mac to add a second drive, there's numerous enclosures available to rehouse it externally too.

DVDs from 5 years ago that have been in a plastic wallet from the day they were burned are showing read errors for me a lot of the time and I was under the impression it was a useful medium for back up when HDDs were expensive.

Just incase anyone assumes the read errors are the external drive not functioning. The disks were burned on a still fully functioning IDE pioneer burner in a G4 and both the Mac Mini internal drive housed externally and the pioneer have read errors with the DVDs so it's neither bargain basement brand X media or optical drives that are the problem. It's the genuine longevity of DVDs as a storage medium.

Very informative post!

Still: :apple: + WinVista --> he'll have try and see. --> then maybe get an external.
So first you claimed you gave the only answer to the OP's question, which isn't true, and you didn't even address the original question.
Then you claimed that no one can answer the first question, when an answer was already given.
Now you want to try to pick apart the answer, when it was accurate and complete.
Rather than criticize other people's responses, why don't you just provide whatever answers you have, then let others do the same and let the OP decide which posts are helpful. This isn't a competition. Just help when you can and let others do the same without criticism.

I've bought my 2012 macbook air with an external optical drive since i'm currently in another country to my vista.

thank you all for replying and sorry about the old technology fuss. haha
