Folks I'd like to start posting some music videos on youtube very much similar to this one here

My question is what kind of software is used so I can take a song file and add an image to it like in the video above? Like I'm guessing or take it that its an animated picture kind of like a .gif file (if on windows).

I'd like to know what software I would need and where I can get it from, and also if this type of software is available for both Win and MacOS. I'd prefer to use one suitable for Win being I'm always mainly using Win7 on my iMac.

Any and All help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you want to create that animated element? There are hundreds of different pieces of software out there. Some extremely high end some for the home user, at a wide range of price points and capabilities. A couple possibilities below with free versions. What you want to do might require a paid plugin.

the harder (better) way:

the easier (simpler) way:
https://hitfilm.com/express

tons of tutorials on YouTube and others (though some are terrible). focus on learning about particles.

depending on how deep you want to go, you have to get into CD/3D animation too.
https://www.blender.org/

usually anything amazing or beautiful is done with several pieces of software but what you reference above is simple and flat, you should aim higher.

if you have no experience with animation, compositing and editing software, you got some learning to do and I don't think you will get a complete answer through a forum post.

Load your song into iTunes. Turn on the iTunes visualizer. Record with a video screen capture program. Bing clip in FCP or some video editing software alloing blending of video layers. Select an appropirate blend mode that knocks out the black and leaves the lighter parts of the visualizer capture (screen / overlay?).

OR yeah, do what TAF sugs above for more pro quality.

Thanks a lot for the info. Could you tell me what exactly to youtube that would show a tutorial on how to do what I'm looking to do? Also would you happen to know exactly how many file types would I be working with? I had thought or seen things as I would take a regular mp3 file or standard music type of file then another file that contained the animated image or video and combine the two? -OR- am I seeing things completely wrong?

are you saying you already have the animations and you just want to be able to combine them?

Kind of sort of. As soon as I know what it is that I need I was gonna get a friend to help me make the animations. I know what I want and have it in mind. BUT I need to know if the animations is a video or an animated picture that can be done in photoshop or something else along the lines, then yes combine or compile it with a song so its like the clip I linked.

I was going to say Trapcode Form, but others above me seem to have more experience. But that was my guess based on my very limited time with Form (for After Effects).

After Effects and Form are really easy once you learn the interface but have a bit of a learning curve, a day or two at least for someone with no experience in most cases. That's to learn it in detail, though, if you just do a tutorial on the basic interface and on form you can learn it in an hour or two.

But it seems there are better options, listed above.

your recommendation is a very good one, for someone ready to commit. I just pointed out free software as OP seemed a total novice and looking way past his understanding. I wish he would talk to his friend rather than expecting us to know what his friend is doing.

This looks like it was done using the trapcode form plug-ins with the beat reactor in after effects. Not terribly difficult to do if you are familiar with AE.
