How do I make an animated .gif?

Okay, here's the deal. This is my 489th post, so I am going to be able to have an avatar soon (hopefully today). I would like to make an animated .gif myself, but I don't know how to go about doing this. Could I get some instructions from you wise gurus out there? I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Yep.

Ignore the fact that it demonstrates it on Windows. 🙂

Experiment with something simple first before getting too ambitious.
Also, don't ignore the file size limit for avatars before you get carried away. 🙂

Still trying to think of what to do though. Two of my favourite things have already been done. 24 and the hitchhikers guide.
