I'm new to mac I have a macbook pro and want to make animated avatars put in forums like I see.I also want to make my own wallpaper and banners.Is their any free program to use to do this?If not what photoshop program should I buy?I'm kinda confused so many.Thanks

ImageReady (now folded into Photoshop as of CS3) is the standard for making animated gifs.

But GIMP is a good, free app that can handle all sorts of image work, including animations. If you want something very simple that basically just takes existing pics and makes an animation out of them, something like GIFfun may be what you're looking for.
