I am a computer knowledge lightweight and I need help with this one. I have a 1 year old 24" iMac and every time I open videos with a .wmv ending, the machine downloads them but all I get is gibberish text. Do I need a program to open them? It seems like everyone sends me videos with .wmv

I third that. Even if it is not 100% stable, it supports many different formats, so that you only need one player.

First of all: it is true that Windows Media Player is PPC-only. But Windows Media Player is not the same as the Flip4Mac component, which, as far as I can tell, is a Universal Binary.

    - Flip4mac
    - VLC

    Don't use windows media player.

Download and install Perian. Let's you view wmv, as well as a slew of other formats, directly with Quicktime. And it's free.

Two things you should get for QuickTime to play anything (almost):

    - Flip4Mac
    - Perian
    .

    Go fetch.
