When I mount an external disk, I can add it to the Spotlight privacy pane and all is well; Spotlight will quit indexing the drive. However, if I unmount/mount the drive or reboot/mount the drive, Spotlight starts indexing the drive all over again and I have to add it to the privacy pane again. Is there a way to make Spotlight permanently "forget" an external drive?

System Prefs --> Spotlight --> Privacy.

Add the drive(s) you want to exclude.
But the problem is that they disappear from that pane when you unmount the drive, and DO NOT reappear when you mount the drive. How can I make it permanent?

I did this before. I think if you just need to make a new file or folder called '.Spotlight-V100' on the drive you dont want searched and set the permission to read only. Delete the existing file of first of course.
