I know how to turn off Siri's voice for the navigation one trip at a time but is there a way to permanently turn her off during navigation? It always defaults back on with each new trip...

The application is made for vehicle navigation,if you sit watching your device all the time when driving on highways, you're a dangerous person. For terrain navigation when walking, try motion-x GPS.

Lol. Not a dangerous person.
My car has CarPlay and the maps are thrown up on the large screen on the dashboard.

You can turn voice off permanently in Settings.

"Settings > Maps > Driving and Navigation"
Set "Navigation Voice Volume' to "No Voice".

Looking at the dashboard during driving is dangerous, and in most European countries,if you do that, and the police see it,you will be sent to jail. You're supposed to watch where you drive, which means keeping your eyes on the road, that's why there is voice navigation.

OP, tell us why you'd rather look at the map than the road in front of you.

Go ahead. Make it a good reason. We'll wait.

god some boomer wants to turn off maps voice when instead they should be turning off the display

the whole point of having CarPlay is to have the big console screen to view maps on. You can turn the voice off right from the screen on my honda's CarPlay. I hate having it on cos it constantly turns down the music which is even more distracting. i really wish they could find a way to not have it lower the volume of the music to speak. most of the time i just need a slight cue not a long annoying sentence

[doublepost=1503935788][/doublepost]Using Carplay in my 2018 TLX, I discovered that as I enter the nav guidance mode, I can click on the box on the lower left of the screen and set either guidance mode or ETA mode. In ETA mode, you do not get turn by turn guidance, but you do see the map with traffic and you current location and destination. If you zoom in, you can see the turns pretty clearly. Like the OP, I often use nav as just a back up to see traffic patterns and occasionally confirm a needed turn. I listen to recorded books while driving, and having constant interruptions for minor, often redundant, nav details was driving me nuts. Once you are underway, you can toggle the system on and off from "ETA" to guidance by selecting and clicking on the nav "box" in the lower left part of the screen.

So, who does not glance at their spedomitor
Wow! Tough room...

Stay Strong: Who does not look and gas gauge, speedo, temp while driving, or turning on the radio? Just like all the other info I like maps without voice to.

Oh so you drive with the display off? Or perhaps you glance at it occasionally to look at the time, or the music playing? Of course it's unsafe to STARE at the display, but usually you have a pretty good idea of where you're going and just need to glance at the screen for reminders or to check what is currently the quickest route.

I don't have CarPlay, but I always have my navigation voice off on my iPhone, because I'm always listening to podcasts/audiobooks. When the voice is on it either plays over the voice (making both inaudible) or is always cutting out of what I'm listening to which is jarring/annoying (different apps handle this different ways).

Fine.

Here's your answer. Tap anywhere on the map, and the top bar appears. Tap the speaker icon in the upper left to mute the voice directions.

It'll stay muted until you decide to un-mute it.
