How do I re-open the timeline (editing window?) in iMovie?

I closed it by clicking a button on it's top left, a little gray X symbol. I have tried to the past hour to find a way to re-open it. Restarting imovie doesn't do it and google has nothing.

Which version iMovie do you have?
Have you looked in the View menu to see if there's a setting to open the Timeline viewer?

You can only see the Timeline by opening an existing Project, or creating a new one.
