I have messages as the second app open. I made it narrow so the list of messages is hidden, but how do I display that list pane? I would have thought that two finger drag would expose it.

You need to keep resizing the iMessages window bigger until it appears. Apple designed it that way because they know best!
 
LOL. I just found that you have to hover the pointer right next to the left edge. I really hope Apple makes the area larger or add a two finger gesture.
