How do I set time capsule to back up using only ethernet cable?

Hi guys,

I'd like to set my time machine (on it's first ever initial back up) to back up solely using an ethernet cable, as this is the quickest way to back up.

How do I do this?

Click the AirPort icon on the menu bar and turn it off until the backup has finished.

I've tried that, it's not working now, says that it has failed, it won't even begin to 'prepare'.

I have ethernet selected as top priority in airport configuration. it's all plugged in and says it's connected.
