I'm on my iphone 13m and looking at my messages I'm using about 1.6GB of data currently. My icloud account is showing 75+GB of data and I'm not exactly sure why. I like having messages backedup but can't understand where this 75GB is coming from. Is there a way to view these messages and see what's in them? I've been digging around looking for large attachments and can't seem to figure out how to find them and possibly remove them. I don't want a bunch of 4k 60fps clips murdering my 200GB account. At the same time I like to keep records of everything so wanting to find a means to download everything and put it on my own home server if I can free up that icloud account. When I log into icloud website it shows 75+GB of messages but no means to access them or alter anything about them.

If you would like to see all your data and have the ability to look through it all (in more detail) to determine what you wish to keep, you can go to appleid.apple.com, log in, and request your data. After a few days, you should get an email letting you know your files are ready to be downloaded (in zip format). Once you unzip the files, you will be able to see your messages and any other files you mark as wanting a copy of for the download.

Had never known this was here. Took some real digging once in there. But when I look to get access to my data it would appear everything but messages is listed. There's photos and app data and purchases but no messages.

It has been a few years since I did this. I thought it provided messages as well. It appears I was wrong. Sorry about that.

This might be of some help.
